3.1 BMP Terminology

BMPs can be categorized as Non-Structural or Structural. In most cases, an effective mix of Structural and Non-Structural BMPs is needed to meet the set objectives.

  • Non-structural BMPs are “soft” techniques, such as establishing policies and regulations, advocating responsible use of pesticides and fertilizers, and providing information and education. Non-Structural BMPs tend to be less expensive than Structural BMPs; however, there is less assurance of effectiveness because their performance depends on effective delivery of information and compliance with the recommendations given.
  • Structural BMPs are designed facilities or modified natural environments that provide predictable improvements in urban stormwater quality and quantity.

BMPs can also be categorized according to where they intervene in stormwater flow:

  • On-Site BMPs manage the pollutant content and volume of stormwater as close as possible to their origin.
  • Conveyance BMPs reduce pollutants while the runoff is being conveyed to the receiving water body. These are primarily structural BMPs.
  • End-of-Pipe BMPs treat stormwater from a significant fraction of the catchment area. These are primarily structural BMPs.
