Introduction

WARNING - Standards and Guidelines Have Their Limitations!

Fact: The Bow River Basin has a unique combination of a cold, arid to semi-arid climate, frequent chinooks, impermeable soils, and nutrient-poor streams.

Fact: Many of the current guidelines provide little information on the applicability and effectiveness of recommended practices for the Bow River Basin.

Fact: The majority of the guidelines and BMPs in the literature were derived for completely different climate regions: the Province of Alberta guidelines merely summarize some of the BMPs being used in Ontario, the Eastern Seaboard and the Pacific Northwest.

Therefore:

  • Caution must be exercised when testing and/or applying “proven” methods from other regions; it cannot be assumed that they will be effective in the Bow River basin.
  • More research is needed on the effectiveness of BMPs in the Bow River Basin.
